Toyota recall: RAV4 SUVs for battery concerns

Toyota is recalling 1,853,568 of its 2013-2018 RAV4 SUVs because certain replacement 12-volt batteries may not fit properly in the battery tray, allowing the battery to move and contact the hold-down bracket, possibly causing a short circuit. If sufficient heat is generated by a short circuit, components within and around the battery can sustain thermal damage, increasing the risk of a fire, the automaker said in a report filed with NHTSA.

Dealers will replace the battery clamp sub-assembly, battery tray, and positive terminal cover, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed Dec. 17. Owners may contact Toyota's customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's numbers for this recall are 23TB13 and 23TA13.

Dealers will update the view monitor control module software, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed Dec. 22. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500 Option 6. Mazda's number for this recall is 6223J.

The defect increases the risk that the pop-up engine hood may not activate as designed: to raise the rear end of the hood in certain frontal collisions to help reduce impact to the head of a pedestrian, the automaker said in a NHTSA report. This may increase the risk of injury to the pedestrian in the event of such an accident, the company said.
